Will Steffen

Patron - global change

Emeritus professor of environment and society at the Australian National University (ANU), Will Steffen is one of the godfathers of the ‘stable planet’ paradigm. He has a long and deep history in international global change research, serving 1998-2004 as executive director of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP), based in Stockholm, and before that as executive officer of IGBP's Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems project. Will was the inaugural director of ANU’s Climate Change Institute, 2008-12, and director of its Fenner School of Environment and Society. He has served as science adviser to the Australian Government’s Department of Climate Change (2004-11) and its Climate Commission (2011-13), chair of the Antarctic Science Advisory Committee, co-director of the Canberra Urban and Regional Futures (CURF) initiative, and member of the Australian Capital Territory’s Climate Change Council. He is currently a climate councilor with the Climate Institute.  Will’s interests are broad within sustainability and earth system science, emphasizing climate science, adaptation in land systems, incorporation of human processes in earth system modelling and analysis - and the history and future of the relationship between humans and the rest of nature.
